THANK YOU FOR A GREAT WEEK 1!
MISSION AND COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL PLAN FOCUS FOR WEEK 2
PICTURES ABOVE: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YEAR 2021-22
Thank you to the entire CHEC team, for a wonderful week 1!  It was great to see our students, their smiling eyes, and their joy at being back together with their classmates, teachers, and school staff. Thank you to all for your collaboration, teamwork, and support as we navigate all of the changes and protocols.  As we progress through the academic year, I will highlight elements of the mission, and of the Comprehensive School Plan, that can focus our efforts and work.  This week, the focus is on the phrase from the mission which states, “We trust one another to continually improve our practices.”  Trust is the foundation of team work, and trust is built when leadership is not only shared, but sought out by team members.  With this in mind, the Shared Leadership domain of our CSP has the following goal and sub-goal:

By June 2022, we will increase our leadership Insight Score from 4.5 to 6.0

  • Sub- Goal: Increase the positive response rate to “Leaders at my school seek out feedback from teachers” and “Teachers understand how our actions contribute to school priorities and goals” (Target 60% of teachers agree or strongly agree)
    • Increase the participation of teachers in non-leadership roles (13%) that attend 60% of the ALT meetings and join at least one committee on ALT (Target by 50%)

We have made progress in this area, however we would like to continue to grow.  In order to ensure we are seeking feedback, and engaging teachers and other staff in understanding how priorities and goals are set, and how our work contributes to accomplishing them, we will structure our meetings so that every collaborative opportunity has a purpose, norms, and opportunities for exchange of ideas.

Every staff member is a member of several teams – a content or specialty team, a small learning community team, and the overall CHEC team.  There are also additional teams, which are voluntary, but critical to the overall achievement of the Mission.  These teams are the Academic Leadership Team (ALT), which this year will have a sub-team to lead MTSS. The ALT team is open to all, and it is not necessary to attend all meetings, one can participate as issues of interest arise.   We also have the Local School Advisory Team, which has elected representatives, but whose meetings are open to all.

Please engage in your department, SLC, the whole school team, the ALT, or  the LSAT, and provide your feedback and ideas.  In order to have true shared leadership, we need the participation of all members of our team.  Please also encourage your students and their families to share their voice.  The best ideas and plans arise when there is an opportunity for all members of the team to provide input.  We look forward to a successful school year building on the leadership structures in place, and building the leadership of our entire school community.

Knights and Griffins are powerful beyond measure!!

WEEK 2 OF ADVISORY 1

As we begin this new school year, we are going slow to go fast.  The second week of the school year we continue  building community, getting to know our students, and creating routines and rituals that build socio-emotional learning. This week, if it hasn’t been done already, we will launch our first GRASPS. The launch can be done in a way that is interactive, for example, having students read the GRASPS, and posing Wow’s and Wonders.  You can also do a continuum exercise, by asking questions about prior knowledge, or level of interest.  Please be sure to introduce your first GRASPS this week, in a way that generates intellectual curiosity and student.  After the introduction, each lesson builds on the content and work, so that the final product is completed through both work and class and outside of class. If you need any assistance with sequencing the instruction of your GRASPS, please see your department chair or SLC administrator.

Thank you for all you do to make instruction engaging for all students!

CHEC ALUM MICHAEL RODRIGUEZ GRADUATES AVIATION PROGRAM

Recently, Major Wright attended Michael Rodriguez's aviation program graduation at Delaware State University.  He received his wings, certificate of completion, and his civilian pilot's license.  Major Wright was also able to present him with his diploma and brought his mom up on stage so she could have the honor of moving his tassel to the graduate side of the cap.
Michael is among the first group of Navy JROTC cadets to go through this course. The Navy funded a small number of qualified minority cadets this year to begin addressing the diversity gap in the aviation field. The guest speaker for the event was NASA astronaut Navy Commander Victor Glover Jr, who returned from 168 days in space on SpaceX 1 .
One of Michael's graduation requirements was flying 100 miles out, landing at 2 different airports, and flying 100 miles back ...solo.

One of CHEC's finest.
Major Wright

DONORS CHOOSE - MS. GARCIA CARMONA HAS A PROJECT FUNDED!

Ms. Garcia Carmona’s classroom project "Notebook, Pencils,---Miss, I Forgot My Mask!" was recently funded by Donors Choose.

My Students
My students are a wonderful group of 8th graders, many of whom have immigrated from countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Philippines, Ethiopia, Laos, and the Dominican Republic. All 8th grade students at my school are language learners whether that is learning Spanish for the first time or learning English. We are a dual language community that works together to learn about societal issues, poetry, theatre, and short stories all in Spanish! My students work together to break language barriers and communicate with each other. I have seen students who speak only Spanish work with students who only speak English to collaborate and help each other succeed.

My Project
These materials will provide our students with a safe start to the new school year. After spending an entire year learning virtually, I would like our students to feel at ease, knowing that all the materials they have at school are sanitized daily and are safe for them to use.

With these materials, all a student would need to worry about is attending class. I would like for every student to feel welcomed and not anxious about forgetting their masks or materials at home. Please consider bringing peace and safety to our students!

DONORS CHOOSE - MR. AGUILAR HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HIS STUDENTS!

My Students
My students are a wonderful group of High school kids, many who have immigrated from countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Philippines, Ethiopia, Laos, and the Dominican Republic amongst other. 90% of students at my school are language learners - whether that is learning Spanish for the first time, or learning English. We are a dual language community that works together to learn about societal issues, poetry, theatre, and short stories.

My Project
My students are some of the most resilient people I have ever met. Many of them have fled their home country because of violence, political corruption, and poverty. All my students are English language learners and some have experienced interrupted education. However, they do not let their current or past struggles get in the way of pursuing a better future for themselves and their families. My students invest time in their education. They stay after school, on Saturdays, and even come in the summer just so they can catch up to the rest of their peers

DONORS CHOOSE - MS. ALVARADO HAS CREATED A NEW PROJECT FOR HER STUDENTS! STURDY CHAIRS FOR COMFORTABLE LEARNING

My Students
My students are some of the most resilient people I have ever met. Many of them have fled their home country because of violence, political corruption, and poverty. All my students are English language learners and some have experienced interrupted education. However, they do not let their current or past struggles get in the way of pursuing a better future for themselves and their families. My students invest time in their education. They stay after school, come to school on Saturdays, and even come in the summer just so they can catch up to the rest of their peers. Their passion and perseverance is truly inspiring.

My Project
I am requesting classroom chairs that create a safe and comfortable classroom. After a year and a half of virtual learning, my students are coming back to the classroom, and they deserve to be safe and comfortable! Our classroom furniture is over 15 years old.
Unfortunately, the chairs are in very bad condition. Many of the seats are terribly stained or ripped. The handles have broken off over the years, so they are stuck in the position that they are, and some of the backs are loose or broken.

DC CONGRESSWOMAN ELEANOR HOLMES NORT RECOGNIZES THREE CHEC STUDENTS FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE 39TH ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION

WEEKLY SPORTS UPDATE
Athletics are an integral part of the educational program and a means to accomplish the goals of education. Our athletic program exists for the welfare of students and the contributions it makes to their educational experience.  Athletic participation builds self-esteem and confidence and provides the necessary tools for success.  The interaction between individuals on the fields of sport teaches students the value of teamwork, while developing the proper competitive spirit, combined with a sense of fairness.
