THANK YOU FOR A GREAT WEEK 2!
MISSION AND COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL PLAN FOCUS FOR WEEK 3
PICTURES ABOVE: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YEAR 2021-22
MARIA TUKEVA’S (MT) MESSAGE:
As we progress through the academic year, I will highlight elements of the mission, and of the Comprehensive School Plan, that can focus our efforts and work.  This week, the focus continues to be on the phrase from the mission which states, “We trust one another to continually improve our practices.”  This week, we will reflect upon how we can build trust with our parents and families.  The Engagement domain of our CSP has the following goals:

  • By June 2022, we will engage 100% of our parents in at least two school events.
  • By June 2022, we will increase positive response rate on the parent Panorama survey regarding “I feel well informed about what is happening at my child's school” from 79% to 89% and “My school regularly communicates updates about my child's progress with me” from 79% to 89%

For the first goal, engaging 100% of our parents in at least two school events, next week (Wednesday, September 22) we will have our Back to School Night, and this is an ideal opportunity to engage the majority of our parents. During Back to School Night, parents have a chance to meet all teachers and staff.  For this year, we want to ensure that instead of just letting parents know what their children will be learning, that we are finding out what they would want them to learn.  On Back to School Night, we will set up time for parents to share how they would like to see our curriculum and instruction be relevant to their children.

In terms of the second goal, parents feeling well informed, a key focus this year has to be our response to the pandemic.  We have shared DCPS protocols and plans with parents, but now we need to share information on how these protocols are working in real time, get feedback on how parents and students are experiencing the protocols, and engage parents as partners in working to prevent COVID 19 in our school and community. A key component of responding to the pandemic, is ensuring that we are transparent and supportive in the grading process, so that all students can experience success. One of our Tier 1 strategies is Grade Calibration, collaborating on how we give grades, and sharing best practices so that students can be successful in all classes.

As we start this new school year, let’s start with a lens of authentically engaging and communicating with our students’ parents and caregivers. Thank you CHEC Team!

COVID 19 UPDATES

The new school year is bringing a great deal of complexity, as we balance safety protocols with the desire for a strong and welcoming learning environment.  We have begun to experience cases, and are following the protocols of identifying close contacts, informing the school community, and informing those who need to quarantine. Now that there are members of our community quarantining, we need to take advantage of some of our virtual learning in order to make instruction available to those students. If a student in your class has to quarantine, you will be made aware, and we ask that you set up your class on TEAMS, so that the quarantining students can listen in to class.  In addition, please be sure that you are posting all assignments and assessments on CANVAS, so that students who are quarantining can access them.

In order to continually assess and improve our response, we are forming a COVID 19 SERT team. The team’s first meeting will be Tuesday, September 14, at 3:45 pm, in the Cafeteria.

INSTRUCTION:
WEEK 2 - INSTRUCTION KICKS INTO HIGH GEAR
WEEK 3 OF ADVISORY 1

As we begin this new school year, we are going slow to go fast.  The third week of the school year we will begin informal visits to class, and we will be providing feedback on SEL openers and strategies, Tier 1 interventions, and the level of engagement in the current GRASPS. This week, students should be fully engaged in their first GRASPS. After the introduction, each lesson builds on the content and work, so that the final product is completed through both work and class and outside of class. If you need any assistance with sequencing the instruction of your GRASPS, please see your department chair or SLC administrator.

Thank you for all you do to make instruction engaging for all students!

DONORS CHOOSE - MS. WARREN HAS POSTED A FUNDING PROJECT AT DONOR'S CHOOSE

Ms. Warren’s classroom project Laptop Bags for High School and College Success! was recently posted at Donor’s Choose.

My Students
AP English Language is a rigorous, college level course. It is a class that requires dedication, hard work and critical thinking at the highest level. I teach this class to a group of amazing high schoolers of different backgrounds, cultures and experiences. Some of my students have arrived in the country only several years before, learning the language at lightning speed. Other students are native to the US, but travel an hour each way to make their way to school. No matter my students' story, each one is infused with a passion for success, social justice and creating change.

My juniors have lofty post graduation goals ranging from attending medical school to majoring in sports management and understand that doing well in class is the vehicle to achieving their aspirations.
With your help, each student can continue surging towards reaching their dreams and changing the world.

My Project
Each of my students has a laptop to prepare for a 21st century world, however they do not have the accessories needed to fully take advantage of their technology. CHEC students travel from across the city to class and a sturdy laptop bag will help them to protect their computers. They will also be able to take these bags with them to college and future endeavors. Lastly, a class set of headphones will allow students to learn at different paces over varying subject areas. Students will be able to watch learning videos, record and be independent learners in the classroom.

Help me give my students high quality Lenovo laptop bags and Hi-Fi head phones.

Athletics are an integral part of the educational program and a means to accomplish the goals of education. Our athletic program exists for the welfare of students and the contributions it makes to their educational experience.  Athletic participation builds self-esteem and confidence and provides the necessary tools for success.  The interaction between individuals on the fields of sport teaches students the value of teamwork, while developing the proper competitive spirit, combined with a sense of fairness.
