CHEC ENROLLMENT - MS. CARINO WITH FLOR ANDRADE AND HER FATHER ALBERTO
MARIA TUKEVA’S (MT) MESSAGE:
ENDING THE YEAR STRONG WITH STUDENTS TAKING THE STAGE FOR PORTFOLIO PRESENTATIONS

Portfolio presentations are a powerful opportunity for students to not only reflect, but to find their voice and purpose as they discuss what they have learned this year.  Presenting portfolios virtually can be even more challenging for students, so it is important to help them plan and prepare.

As we view portfolios, we also can reflect on the effectiveness of our curriculum in engaging students and promoting deep understanding.  As we discussed in our Courageous Conversation about Curricululm in last week’s faculty meeting, every decision we make about texts, materials and topics, should be grounded in principles of equity and anti-racism.  As we end the school year, now is the time to reflect upon  what we have taught, and how we have taught it.  As you listen to your students’ portfolio presentations, ask yourself, the parents  and students the following questions:

  • Did this GRASPS or unit really engage students? How do you know?
  • Did this GRASPS or unit reflect our students’ identities and cultures?
  • How many and which perspectives were represented in the texts or materials students engaged with?
  • Did this GRASPS or unit result in students finding their own voice or perspective on the topic or ideas?
  • Did this GRASPS or unit inspire students to share their personal view of social justice?

We can use these reflections to revitalize and refocus our curriculum, and to build in a cycle of reflection that involves all stakeholders.  Try to reach out to as many parents as possible to attend the presentations, by publishing a calendar on CANVAS this week.

As discussed in our Faculty Meeting, this summer, we will strengthen this work by having a Curriculum Development Institute in which students, parents and teachers co-design curriculum.  If you are interested, please sign up!

CHEC’S 8th and 12th GRADERS WILL HAVE IN PERSON GRADUTION CEREMONIES

On June 22,  at 4:00 pm 180 seniors will walk across a stage for an in-person graduation, at Audi Field. After a year and half of ceremonies and gatherings being cancelled, this is truly a momentous occasion.  The event will be held with social distancing and health protocols, to ensure the safety of all.  In order to maintain the social distancing, we only have space for 20 faculty members to attend.  If you wish to attend, please enter this random lottery:

On June 18, at 10:00 am, our 8th graders will take the state in our CHEC auditorium, to be promoted to the 9th grade.  We will also have a lottery for staff attendance, in order to maintain social distancing.

JUNE  IS LGBTQ+ PRIDE MONTH

During June we celebrate LGBTQ+ history as well as explore current social justice issues within our curriculum.  As a school committed to anti-racism and equity, we celebrate the richness of our community holds in gender identity, race, culture, faiths, language and national origin.  Ms. Ermis has sent communication and resources that all of us should use.  Please reach out to with ideas for whole school activities during this month.

REENROLLMENT TIME

Please help us reach our enrollment target of 1,500 students for SY 21-22.  To date, we have fully enrolled 921 students, or 61% of our goal.  Please make re-enrollment announcements part of your daily announcements or updates.  We are offering incentives to the teachers, counselors and support staff who help us enroll or re-enroll the most students, as well as administrative premium for reaching out outside of normal school hours. This week during SLC, we will provide time for all SLC members to reach out to students in the grade level who have not yet re-enrolled.

RECOVERY/ACCELERATION PLAN APPROVED

We have now submitted our budget spending plan for Summer Acceleration, and are extremely excited about what we will be able to offer this summer!  We have already started recruiting staff and students. If you are interested in working in our creative and innovative Summer Acceleration plan, please reach out and apply. Within the next two weeks, we will begin to work on the spending plan for the Acceleration and Recovery Activities to be held in during the school year. The outline of our goals and programming can be seen by clicking here.

DONORS CHOOSE - MS. ERICKSON HAS A PROJECT FUNDED

Ms. Erickson’s classroom project  "Independent Reading Books for Students of the Week Incentives"  was recently funded by Donors Choose.

MY STUDENTS

Our ninety 8th-grade students are intellectually-curious, creative, and resilient scholars who work hard each day in class to fulfill our school's mission "to succeed in college and civic life as leaders in the quest for social justice." These students are mostly Latino and African American. Many are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Many are learning English. 100 percent qualify for free and reduced lunch. Despite the obstacles that face our students, they are incredibly hardworking and diligent, focused on their studies and achieving their goals.

We cultivate our loves of reading together every day. Our students are grateful to have access to texts, both in and outside of the classroom, to learn and develop their skills. Personal copies of texts enable our students to annotate on and interact with their reading as well as come back to what they read and continue their pursuits as lifelong readers. These students inspire me daily, and as they begin to leave their marks on the world in the future, I hope they inspire you, too!

MY PROJECT

Remaining academically motivated during remote learning from home amidst the pandemic is challenging for even the most diligent students. My students learn best and are able to overcome academic challenges when their hard work is regularly celebrated in our virtual classrooms. In my classroom, to recognize students' hard work, I select five students each week as our Students of the Week. My ninety students and I celebrate these students in class by congratulating them virtually and sending encouraging messages to them and their families. Their favorite part of being selected, though, is getting to pick an independent reading book to keep. Our students are so grateful to have access to texts of their own to continue their independent reading outside of class, enabling them to continue to build their reading and critical thinking skills, take ownership of their learning, and remain motivated amidst this challenging time.

The resources for this project include:

  • Among The Hidden x 3
  • Fahrenheit 451: A Novel x 3
  • Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book One: The Lightning Thief x 8
  • The Hunger Games x 4
  • Gathering Blue x 3
  • Looking for Alaska x 3
  • Ghost Boys x 3
  • The Alchemyst x 3

P.S. Check out your school page at DonorsChoose to see all the teachers posting projects from your school. You can trade tips and tricks with colleagues to get your projects funded.

Athletics are an integral part of the educational program and a means to accomplish the goals of education. Our athletic program exists for the welfare of students and the contributions it makes to their educational experience.  Athletic participation builds self-esteem and confidence and provides the necessary tools for success.  The interaction between individuals on the fields of sport teaches students the value of teamwork, while developing the proper competitive spirit, combined with a sense of fairness.
